First, thanks for the link to Buchanan's article. He has been preaching the good word about the evils of free trade in season and out of season -- sadly mostly out of season.
Second, free trade as a doctrine was embraced by the Slave Power early in American history because it was always a system that benefited an artificial aristocracy (the slave owners) while reducing everyone else to utter dependence on that artificial aristocracy, either as slaves or as little better than serfs. This is why Jefferson (the arch-typical early American artificial aristocrat) supported free trade, and why his later disciples (John Taylor, John Calhoun) did as well.
Third, with that in mind, one can see that free trade continues to do what it was designed to do -- empower and make even more wealthy an artificial aristocracy at the expense of the middle class and the working class. Free trade is working perfectly -- once one understands precisely what it is designed to do. Jefferson would be gleeful!
Fourth, glad to see you moving towards the position that brought America prosperity and peace for so very long. As Buchanan has demonstrated in his books, the best system for an American First, pro-peace, pro-prosperity agenda is the Hamilton-Clay-Lincoln American System.
Real free trade might work, but not the reverse mercantilism Buchanan condemns.
Real free trade doesn't exist and never will. It is a utopian dream -- actually distopian nightmare. Look at who supports free trade, both historically and currently, and then ask cui bono? Slave power in the 18th & early 19th centuries, imperialist power in the late 19th and 20th century, now post-national global elites (our new artificial aristocracy). The path of peace & prosperity is the path set out my Hamilton, Clay and Lincoln.

America doesn't have free trade, it has the system that came out of Hamilton, Clay and Lincoln.
If you want to argue against free trade and against the plutocracies that inevitably occur from free trade, or pretenses there of, I will agree with you, but don't pretend the South somehow won the war.
Modern american is formed in the image of the Republican party. A party that has always been the image of Hamilton, Clay and Lincoln.
